High-frequency circuit R&D for wireless communications
Atsuki Hirayama, 2nd degree, Master’s programe

Mobile phones, GPS, Wi-Fi, and other types of wireless systems are essential to our lives. At the Yoshimasu Lab, we design circuits known as high-frequency circuits that are found in all kinds of wireless systems. To be sure, understanding high-frequency circuits is far from easy. But once you get the basics of analog circuits down, you can start helping design high-frequency circuits right away.
The Yoshimasu Lab is currently working on the design of voltage-controlled oscillators, a type of circuit that generates radio signals for wireless communications, and amplifiers, circuits that increase the size of the generated radio signals and improve the quality of communications.
Once you join our lab, you will be given your own computer and learn how to use circuit simulators and other design tools. Then you will use the circuit simulators to design circuits. After finishing a circuit design, a physical layout of the components on the circuit schematic is determined. When the layout is completed, the design is sent out to a fabricator to produce the circuit. The fabricated circuit is then measured and its performance verified. This is the general workflow once you enter the lab.
At the Yoshimasu Lab, each person is given one or more circuits to design. Independent research is possible, and there are opportunities to present your research at international conferences and other venues. The lab offers a supportive environment in which to design, even if you have never designed high-frequency circuits before. In addition to the lively discussions at our seminars, Professor Yoshimasu and senior researchers provide detailed and patient instruction on daily design work.
High-frequency circuits used in wireless systems are known for their difficulty, even in the world of analog circuit design, but that makes it all the more worthwhile. If you are interested in learning circuit design skills, come and join us.
