Tateno Lab

Turn the imaginings in your mind into reality
Yusuke Katabuchi, 2nd grade, Master program

Although Tateno Laboratory’s research themes span over many disciplines, our overriding aim is to bring creative ideas into material form through logical thinking. Students are given full use of the laboratory’s equipment and space to research themes connected to their personal interests and concerns. Recent student research projects have included a system that assists plant maintenance, an inter-vehicle communication system for small electric vehicles, and a road traffic measurement system based on image processing.

One current research project we are investing our resources in is the development of a mobile surveillance system to assist rescue operations. The system monitors, in software, location data, estimated behaviors, biological data, and other parameters of rescue team personnel in the field. We are now testing a prototype of the system using a wireless network constructed in a partnership with a corporate partner.

The first time people visit our laboratory, they are astonished by the amount of computer parts and electronic parts spread out over shelves and tables. Every student is given a high-spec computer, but you may build your own if you wish. The most important thing for us is apply creative ingenuity to our research continually. Therefore, whenever possible, we build the equipment needed to carry out research ourselves. Our professor will also arrange parts and reference materials students need so we can immerse ourselves in research without any constraints.

The laboratory holds a seminar every Thursday. During the seminar, the professor freely gives information and ideas on each student’s research project. Students can also take advantage of detailed instructions on programming languages and constructing electronics needed to continue their research.

The current students at the Tateno Laboratory came from many different countries including Japan, China, Taiwan, and Saudi Arabia. They also have diverse backgrounds, working experience from different departments/programs. From this, students often teach each other about their own specialties and make use of each other’s research ideas. The laboratory also provides valuable life experience, as students gain attention through interactions with other cultures and values.
