Introduction

Wang Hao, Hiroki Mouri 2nd, Master programme

Natural language Processing (NLP) is an interdiscipline filed of computer science and linguistics, which deals with great challenges from understanding and developing computational theories and methods to cut down language barriers in human communication. This very special research aims to break barriers between people spoken different language, different cultures and languages, and even in facilitating man-machine communication.

In Lepage lab, you can talk your interests in NLP with any members in your group about your research, our research interests cover a wide range of topics like example-based and statistical machine translation, sampling-based alignment, data profiling and analogy, etc. Now our lab consists of 5 PH.D candidates and 6 Master course students, this semester we are glad to welcome the 4 newcomers of Master course. We have the seminar every week, because the students come from various countries, so both English and Japanese can be heard in seminar. Usually, we make presentation on the research progress and discuss around the topic with each other. Moreover, every week we also have research guidance in groups which in the similar research field with Professor Lepage.

I have to say that professor Lepage is one best supervisors I have ever had on my school life. He is energetic, strict and enthusiastic. He can help you to understand the most complicated problem with clear and vivid explanations if you have attend his class.

You may not believe that he start his work from 8 o’clock till late together with students everyday. Professor always require us to treat academic and research attitude seriously and encourage cooperation and teamworks. In fact, we do not know how many languages Professor can speak! Thus, you should not worry about communication problems in such an international family of our lab!

We have lots of lab activities like welcome party, new year party and celebration regularly that is organized by ourselves. Of course, do not forget Beach BBQ. We believe you could have a school life with memories as a graduate in our lab.

I think this is very good opportunities for students who from different countries to strengthen their friendship and cooperation. Our lab has opened its doors to any student who interests in Natural Language Processing and Machine Translation. Do not hesitate to join us! We are waiting for you!
