Revel in the Endless Possibilities Opened up by Fleck of Light

Kong Deqing, 2nd grade Master Programme

Since the dawn of human ingenuity, people start with awed light and gradually aware, acquire and apply light. Nowadays the progress and development in various fields of science and technology, including energy, communication, biology and others, have been closely linked with the study of light. Our Lab focus on mainly optical network, optical sensor, near-field optical microscope and nanooptics, attempting to discover the possibility of practical applications from the infinite possibilities of light.

In the aspect of optical near-field optical microscope, our lab first proposed using dielectric slot waveguides as the probe of optical near-field microscope. This probe, based on high-index-contrast structure in a slot waveguide, with a resolution of 50nm, enables illumination around the tip of the probe by a nanometer wide spot. This probe made by only dielectric metrical gain an edge over conventional metal probe due to the technically demanding and cost of production. In the aspect of nanooptics, we not only research on dielectric waveguides but also plasmonic waveguides which are basined on the surface waveguides transmitted on the interface between metal and dielectric. We study on the confinement of light in tens of nano maters with a significantly high intensity, which can be used as the basic transmission element of optic circuit. By using commercial optical simulation software, we have demonstratable viability of these nano waveguides. In the aspect of optical communication, we come forward highly reliable network models for FTTH applications, and theoretically verified feasibility of these models and compared with them in their arithmetics all around; we turned to find a highly efficient, reliable, low-priced optical network. In the aspect of optical sensor, we design various types of optical sensor to measure temperature, humidity, and movement as well as many other environmental information.

What is more, our lab has an creative and approachable atmosphere where neat ideas and creative insight are valued above formal research. Professor Tsubokawa always listens carefully to our idea on academic research and gives us constructive comments in detail. Other members in lab are also friendly so that we discuss a game, anime, and hobby besides research surmounting the nationality bamboo fence.

We expect you to join us, to research on these challenging, creative, and charming academic fields, to share your life in our family feeling lab, to revell in the endless possibilities opened up by fleck of light.
