Bio Information Sensing
The research interest of my group is “Internet of Medical Things” (IOMT). IOMT is consisted of three fundamental technologies, (1) continuous biosensing device, (2) Internet communication system, and (3) cloud computing technology. Continuous biosensing device includes continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors, blood pressure sensors and wearable sensors, my group is especially working on the development of low cost and high reliability biosensors made of hydrogels, conductive polymer, or paper substrate. Internet communication system can acquire the continuous bioinformation and transmit them to the cloud for further computing. This information transmission system is executed by IOT gadgets of the Raspberry Pi, Arduino Uno, RFID and smartphone. My group is working on the optimization of information transmission with these gadgets. Cloud computing involves Machine learning (ML), Deep learning (DL) that leads to the rapid decision making. Parameters for DL and ML are optimized for making right decisions. Based on this IOMT process, the medical emergency of chronic patients can be detected immediately and treated correctly in the future.
For long term, IOMT can dissect new information with big data from continuous biosensing that cannot be acquired by the conventical techniques. For instance, the continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) biosensor with acquired big data can predict the early stage of diabetics that can reduce the health care cost. Currently, 10 million diabetics patients in Japan are diagnosed every year, and this number is increasing. Additionally, the CGM sensor is expected to realize the early detection of pancreatic cancer (40000/year in Japan) that is extremely challenging. This early detection will be possible based on the detection of drastic glucose signal change from CGM sensor with acquired big data. The numbers of pancreatic cancer patients are also increasing year by year.
In addition to the medical field, IOxT technology can be applied for agriculture, dairy firm, food safety, and water quality monitoring. IOxT technology is critical to open the avenue to establish the sustainable society in the future.
