Title: Fathers’ Involvement in Domestic Work and Mothers’ Employment: Evidence from Bunching (with Nobuyoshi Kikuchi)

Abstract:
We examine husbands’ involvement in domestic work affects their wives’ labor supply during their children’s preschool and early primary school years. We control for the endogeneity of husbands’ domestic work hours by exploiting bunching at zero hours on a weekday. Using Japanese panel data, we find a positive association between husbands’ domestic work hours and wives’ labor supply. However, this association disappears when we control for selection on unobservables, suggesting that the selection largely drives the observed association. Furthermore, an increase in husbands’ domestic work hours increases wives’ domestic work hours, implying complementarity in couples’ domestic work.
