講演タイトル：Viking Economics: Using New Institutional Economics to Analyze the Viking Phenomenon

講演概要：
In this presentation, I show how New Institutional Economics (NIE) can be used to analyse the organisation of the Viking phenomenon. Drawing on archaeological findings as well as written sources, including the Icelandic sagas and accounts by Arab merchants, I apply NIE to understand the origins and expansion of the Viking phenomenon, particularly eastwards, and how this expansion created continuous access to distant goods such as silk and pearls. The presentation develops the arguments presented in our paper, “New Institutional Economics in Viking Studies: Visualising Immaterial Culture”, published in Archaeological Dialogues in 2022, by applying them to a broader range of findings. It further develops arguments concerning the high degree of economic specialisation and the use of credit systems within the Viking diaspora.
