6th Money Doctors Workshop (March 14, 21-22, 2023):

Book Project and Chapters discussion

Workshop venue: Banque de France and online (Webex)

Workshop organisers: Anders Ögren (Uppsala University and UCBH), Andrés Àlvarez (Universidad de los Andes), Masato Shizume (Waseda University), Vincent Bignon (Banque de France)

The Money Doctors workshop gathers, since 2014, a group of researchers interested in monetary and financial topics. Since 2018 we are writing the history of the economists involved in solving practical monetary and financial issues of a country. We have organised sessions at the World Economic History Conferences in Kyoto 2015, Boston 2018 and Paris 2022. In 2018 and 2019 we held onsite meetings hosted by Banque de France. We had planned for another meeting at Banque de France in 2020 that was cancelled due to the pandemic which made us move over to on line seminars. We are now going back to meet onsite and are happy to once again be hosted by Banque de France.

The Money Doctors Book Project Workshop is focusing more specifically on the theme of money doctors through history aiming at a joint publication. Those economists are money doctors when their involvement includes the observation and diagnostic of the monetary and financial troubles and the proposition of a cure. Following the description made by the French novelist and medical doctor Jean-Christophe Rufin in a 2018 lecture, the process of building a diagnostic, the process of diagnosing is the process of listening to many pieces of information and sorting them against practical and theoretical knowledge in order to diagnose the cause of the trouble and derive the appropriate cure, if it exists. By reference to this description, a money doctor is a person who, helped by theoretical and practical knowledge, advises and/or propose to act on how to build a stable monetary and financial system or to repair ongoing monetary turbulence.

This time we combine the possibility of online and onsite meetings. We have devoted one day, 14 March, for the online presentations and discussions and 1 and ½ days, 21 and 22 March, for the onsite presentations at the conference venue of the Banque de France in Paris. All sessions of the workshop can be followed online for the invited public. To gain access to the workshop online please mail Vincent Bignon at [email protected].
