「現代日本の政治学・経済学的研究、およびこれに関連する政治学・経済学の基礎的研究を目的」として設立され、その後、「現代日本のマス・コミュニケーション研究」が加えられた。現在は、現代社会が直面する政治、経済、ジャーナリズム、マス・メディアの諸課題を取り上げて研究し、すぐれた分析を提示するとともに、各界に有益な政策提言をなすことを基本的理念として、研究活動を行っている。
政治経済学術院の研究拠点であるとともに、早稲田大学の政治・経済・ジャーナリズム研究の中心的機関となっている。

The Institute for Research in Contemporary Political and Economic Affairs was established to conduct “research in Japanese contemporary political and economic affairs as well as other related fundamental political and economic fields.” This was later broadened to include “research in contemporary Japanese mass communications.” Today, researchers at the Institute focus on various issues concerning politics, economics, journalism, and mass media, analyzing these matters in depth. Their fundamental mission is to make policy proposals that benefit people across the broad spectrum of society.

The Institute is both a research center for the Faculty of Political Science and Economics and a core political science, economics, and journalism research facility for Waseda University as a whole.
