Objective

In 2024, Japan, Mexico, and the United States held pivotal elections to select their respective political leaders. Presently, these countries are grappling with intricate policy issues involving trade, security, and immigration. There is a growing demand for the restructuring of Japan-Mexico relations, US-Mexico relations, and Japan-US relations. In 2025, under the second Trump administration, the United States is expected to increase economic protectionism, which will have a major impact on the global order. Mexico, led by President Sheinbaum, will have to navigate a difficult course regarding the future of the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement). However, it is also expected to increase its global influence as a junction between the Global North and Global South. The 20th anniversary of the Japan-Mexico Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) in 2025 underscores the significance of reaffirming the cooperative relationship between Japan and Mexico. In the face of current uncertainties surrounding the free trade system and the rise of China, a key question for the future is how Japan, Mexico, and the United States can deepen their meaningful cooperation. What activities can we expect from the students who will be responsible for the future? This symposium aims to disseminate a novel attempt to build a “knowledge creation network” that transcends industries and generations, and to widely share its academic, policy-related and social achievements, through dialogue between Japan, Mexico and the United States.
