【Abstract】
With the rapid development of generative AI, the use of human portraits and voices in what are called AI covers and deepfakes are becoming a global problem. However, legal systems concerning the use of human portraits and voices differ greatly between countries. In this situation, various recent developments, such as Korea’s 2021 revision of the unfair competition prevention act and deepfake sexual crimes prevention law (2024), as well as China’s revision of the civil code (2021) and court decisions regarding the use of human voices, are garnering much attention. In Japan, the “Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2024” (June 2024) has stated that “(r)egarding the utilization and generation of portraits and voices of actors, voice actors, etc. in generative AI, legal concepts concerning the relationship with the Unfair Competition Prevention Law should be organized and reviewed as necessary.”
This event will examine the developments concerning deepfakes in Japan, China, and Korea, and brings together stakeholders in a roundtable discussion.
This event is kindly sponsored by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and hosted by the RCLIP of Waseda University in collaboration with the Centre for Intellectual Property, Policy & Management (CIPPM) at Bournemouth University (England) and University of Aberdeen (Scotland). This event is part of a series of events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the foundation of RCLIP.
