Overview of the Institute

The Institute of Comparative Law (ICL) was organized at the School of Law in 1958. The institute’s mission is to make great contributions to legal studies in Japan and abroad through comparative legal research.

The institute has been providing legal researches of comparative law and introducing Japanese law abroad. Also, the Library of the Institute has been collecting a large number of foreign legal resources, especially statutes, cases, and law reviews.

The purpose of the Institute was to conduct comparative research on the legal systems of Japan and other countries and to contribute to research and education in the field of Japanese legal studies. We currently aim to disseminate information on the development of contemporary Japanese law and Japan’s legal system and to raise critical legal questions of universal importance for discussion from a Japanese perspective.

In 2018, the ICL has marked its 6oth anniversary.
