Message
My research focuses on word meaning, particularly on the concept of synonymy. I plan to compare several synonymous Japanese verbs using dictionaries and online corpora. Understanding the nuances words have is important for effective communication and can be crucial when discussing sensitive topics (such as death, for example). Aside from corpus linguistics, I am equally interested in translation and interpreting and also in language teaching. As GSICCS offers a variety of courses related to language, I have the opportunity to learn about all these disciplines whilst also thinking of ways to connect them. While learning how to analyze data obtained from corpora is my primary objective, doing so also encourages me to think about how this data can benefit language teachers, learners, translators and interpreters.
