My Ph.D. research theme is the settlement of investment disputes under China’s Initiative of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (MSR), focusing on how to legally reduce the investment risks in the context of maritime disputes. The international and trans-regional nature of the 21st Century MSR has complicated the investment along the route, especially the Investor-State investment relations. My research will, first, summarize the bilateral agreements involving investment rules on the MSR, in order to avoid the shortcomings of the existing mechanisms and, then, try to propose the construction of a realistic dispute settlement mechanism. By establishing a unique legal framework to protect investment activities in the context of maritime disputes and realizing the rule of law for the investment activities of countries along the MSR, this research proposal will finally explore to ensure long-term and stable cooperation between members in the MSR region.
