My proposed research project attempts to interrogate the homosexual discourse in Boys’ Love live-action adaptations and inspired originals, in which male homosexuality

as well as sexual identity formation is actively explored and the centrality of heteronormative culture is constantly enhanced and dissolved at the same time.

The outcome of this research will show that the shift of gay characters, from analogous supporting roles for the purpose of displaying sexual perversity to leading roles

that normalize being openly gay, has since been challenging the phenomenon of passing and defying heteronormative mainstream demands for assimilation.

Currently, I focus on intermedial adaptation, especially from manga to television or film, the relationship between Japanese popular media and gender conceptions, and media portrayals of the Japanese LGBTQ community.
