GMP Hosts Exchange Program with Bryant University Students

On August 21 and 22, 2024, 18 students and three faculty members from Bryant University, USA, visited Japan for a dynamic exchange program with GMP students at Waseda University. Over the course of two enriching days, nearly 30 students from both institutions participated in lectures, discussions, cultural activities, and a corporate visit. The program was designed to promote cross-cultural understanding and strengthen the relationship between the two prestigious universities.

Lecture by Professor Akio Hoshino

Day 1: Academic Discussions and Cultural Exchange
The exchange program began on the Waseda campus with a mix of academic and cultural activities. The morning started with an insightful lecture on Introduction to Japanese Business by Professor Akio Hoshino of Waseda University, setting the stage for the day’s learning. Following the lecture, GMP students guided their Bryant counterparts on a campus tour, sharing its rich history and vibrant student culture. A casual lunch at nearby restaurants provided an informal setting for students to network and share experiences.

Special Lecture by Professor James Bishop

In the afternoon, Professor James Bishop of Bryant University delivered an engaging lecture on Culture, Baseball, Money, and Retirement. This was followed by student-led presentations and group discussions on topics such as the use of insurance in the entertainment industry. These interactive sessions not only deepened students’ understanding of industry practices but also encouraged the exchange of diverse ideas and perspectives.


Group Discussion

The day concluded with a lively welcome party hosted by GMP. One of the highlights was an interactive cultural exchange session where Bryant University students shared photos and stories from their time in Japan, including moments of cultural surprises and memorable experiences. The activity sparked laughter, lively conversations, and mutual curiosity, further strengthening the bond between students from both universities.

Day 2: Tokyo Exploration and Business Insights
The second day combined cultural exploration with insights into advanced business practices. Students were divided into four groups to visit iconic Tokyo landmarks such as Meiji Shrine and Tokyo Skytree. Despite heavy rain, the tours provided a unique opportunity for students to connect while experiencing Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

In the afternoon, students from the four groups gathered for a visit to Tokio Marine Holdings. During this corporate visit, they learned about the firm’s innovative approaches to disaster resilience and risk management. Hands-on activities with cutting-edge tools and an engaging Q&A session provided students with practical insights into the firm’s forward-thinking strategies.

Reflections and Conclusions
The two-day exchange program was a deeply enriching experience for all participants. For the GMP students, it was a good opportunity to work closely with international peers, plan and host activities, and immerse themselves in lively discussions and cultural exchanges.

Reflecting on the program, participants emphasized how the experience broadened their global perspectives and highlighted the importance of cultural awareness and collaboration as essential qualities for future global leaders.

The GMP remains dedicated to creating impactful opportunities like these, helping students develop the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
