Open Talk “Mette Holm on… The Life of a Translator/Translation in Denmark”

Haruki Murakami’s Danish translator, Mette Holm, will touch on all aspects of her life as a translator and the life of a translation. She will describe how she began translation work, how Murakami transformed her role into a professional translator, and Murakami’s position in the Danish publishing world. Along the way, she will discuss how she supports other Japanese authors and how they are received by the readers in Denmark.

Mette Holm

Mette Holm is a translator from Denmark. She is the proud mother of two daughters. She received a BA in Anthropology and an MA in Literature from the University of Copenhagen. Since 2001, she has been the main translator of Haruki Murakami’s works in Danish. Her Murakami translations include Hear the Wind Sing, The Wind-up Bird Chronicles, Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore, 1Q84, and Killing Commentadore. She is also a prolific translator of other Japanese authors. Her most recent translations include works by Hiroko Oyamada, Yasunari Kawabata, Ogawa Yoko, and Murata Sayaka, among others.
