Waseda University History Museum Special Exhibition : Chiune Sugihara’s Memoirs

Waseda University History Museum Special Exhibition :  Chiune Sugihara’s Memoirs

During World War II, Sugihara was posted to Kaunas, Lithuania, as a deputy consul at the Japanese Consulate. Sugihara took the initiative to issue visas to many Jewish refugees who had been persecuted by Nazi Germany and were seeking help, saving the lives of approximately 6,000 people.

The Waseda University History Museum has now added two memoirs written by Sugihara in his later years to its collection. To commemorate this occasion, the museum will hold a special exhibition of Sugihara’s handwritten memoirs. The memoirs contain clear descriptions of Sugihara’s feelings leading up to the issuance of the visas and the historical background of the time.

In addition to displaying the actual memoirs, the full text of the memoirs will be shown on panels at the exhibition. Also on display will be the “Sugihara List” (in the collection of the Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), which lists the recipients of the “Visa for Life,” as well as related chronological tables, videos, and more.

The actual memoirs will be on display from Thursday, June 15 to Tuesday, June 20.  Reproductions will be exhibited thereafter.

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the death of Chiune Sugihara, a relief of Sugihara was installed next to Building No. 14 on the Waseda campus.
