We extend our upmost sincere sympathy to all whom have suffered from the Tohoku Earthquake that occurred on March 11th (Friday).

Many people have already contacted WAVOC expressing their will to volunteer. This has put a lot of confidence back for the WAVOC team.

However, by acting quickly it may also cause inconvenience for those at the disaster-stricken area. Please read the following suggestions and rationally reconsider the possible options that can be chosen.

It is most likely that the disaster-stricken areas are not in the condition to accept volunteers. After-shocks are still happening and there are high risks of a secondary disaster. Also, there are shortages of supplies such as food and blankets. It may not only be dangerous to enter disaster-stricken areas but may also cause obstruction with any rescue operation that is being conducted. Do not start anything without careful consideration or appeal from the disaster-stricken areas. Assisting disaster-stricken areas with supplies may cause a strain for those disaster victims. Unless there is an appeal from the disaster-stricken areas do not send any supplies.

The disaster is spread throughout an extensive area. Also, many disaster victims are expected to flee towards Tokyo. Therefore, the need in volunteering around the university or your city may increase. First try gathering information of any people in need in a walking distance from your house. As soon as we have an appeal from the disaster-stricken areas for volunteers, WAVOC will start providing necessary information.

Donating and urging for others to donate is a part of volunteering too. For future restoration there will definitely be a long term assistance/help/support necessary. In order to prepare yourself for the high need of volunteers when the time comes, think to yourself what it is that you can do to help. (Things that are usually demanded from volunteers at the restoration stage are things like garbage and debris collection, and talking to disaster victims).

WAVOC will start providing necessary information in due course when volunteers are necessary and all conditions have been clarified. The Hirayama Ikuo Volunteer Center, Waseda University
