Dear Students of Waseda University,
I would like to convey my sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who passed away due to the huge earthquake and tsunami that took place on the Noto Peninsula this January. Also, I would like to send those in the affected region my heartfelt sympathy and encouragement to persevere and recover your health despite the current severe conditions, which have been reported as worsening day by day.
We, the faculty and administrative staff of Waseda University, are considering several policies to support students who are suffering from the earthquake and/or tsunami. Please be sure to check your Waseda email and the column of MyWaseda as well as the top page of the Waseda University website.
Our classes will start today after the winter break. Students who are suffering due to the earthquake and/or tsunami are not required to come back to the Waseda campuses if it is difficult to do so. You will receive special care from your professors and from each office regarding missing classes as well as attendance at final exams and submitting papers. We understand that your first priority should be recovering your health and helping your family.
Waseda University has not sent any emails to our students to confirm if they are fine or not since January 1, because we thought that students who are suffering from the earthquake and/or tsunami would place higher priority on getting touch with the government of their village, town, city or prefecture than with Waseda University.
If you ever have any questions or requests, however, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the office of your school or your graduate school. Please note the following list of addresses or contact numbers: https://www.waseda.jp/top/contact
Aftershocks and sudden changes of weather including heavy snow or rainfall are still taking place every day. We sincerely hope that our students, our alumni, and their family members will overcome this extreme hardship. Our thoughts are with you in this difficult time.
Best regards,
Aiji Tanaka,
President, Waseda University
