The 5th Waseda Brussels Conference on Global Sustainable Food Supply

On Wednesday, December 13, Waseda University and the Université Libre de Bruxelles held the 5th Waseda Brussels Conference on “Global Sustainable Food Supply” at University Foundation in Brussels. The Waseda Brussels Conference has been held annually since the establishment of the Waseda Brussels Office in April 2016.
The conference began with opening remarks by Masahiko Gemma, Vice President of International Affairs and International Fundraising; His Excellency Yasushi Yamamoto, Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission, the Mission of Japan to the European Union; and a video message from Jean-Eric Paquet, Ambassador, the Delegation of the European Union to Japan.

With the goal of developing international research collaborations in the Japan Cabinet Office’s “Moonshot Goal 5: Sustainable Global Food Supply” (part of the Moonshot R&D Program) and the European Union’s “A Soil Deal for Europe” (part of the Horizon Europe Program), this year’s conference was held with the theme of sustainable global food supply with an emphasis on green agriculture and soil science research.

The conference, which was attended by approximately 70 individuals, consisted of presentations of ideas and the latest groundbreaking research achievements from the above missions, leading to fruitful academic discussions on cooperative research between Japan and Europe. Through scientific discussions by experts, industry leaders and policymakers, the event also reinforced the international research cooperation network between Europe and Japan, bringing the 5th Waseda Brussels Conference to a successful conclusion.
