The growing devastation from the Russian government’s military aggression in Ukraine has been met with widespread confusion and division in the international community, while simultaneously prompting people across the world to come together in a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people. On March 4, President Aiji Tanaka declared Waseda University’s position concerning the crisis in Ukraine, condemning the violation of human rights while showing support to those affected by the crisis.
Waseda University has made arrangements to offer emergency support to researchers affected by the crisis in Ukraine, within the International Office’s framework for Visiting Scholars, Research Fellows, and Research Interns. Through this framework, Waseda will host affected researchers and provide accommodations, such as in guest houses, free of charge for those meeting certain conditions.
Moving forward, the University will work in tandem with the Japanese government and local municipalities to provide possible support to researchers who face difficulties continuing their research. The University is also considering working with external organizations to provide tangible support measures for hosting students from Ukraine affected by the crisis.
