The Autumn Semester 2020 Will Start Tomorrow!

Dear Students of Waseda University,

September 24, 2020

I hope that all of you are well. This autumn, many of you will have face-to-face seminars or labs. Lectures with large number of students will remain online to protect student health. This past summer we installed special air circulation systems in all classrooms. We will ensure physically distanced seating and provide disinfectant in each room. As you come to campus, please rest assured that we have your health foremost in mind. We will gradually return to Waseda’s normal educational environment, while protecting your health.

Some freshman students may not have any in-person classes on account of seminars and labs in some schools and departments beginning only for sophomores or upper classes. Nevertheless, most of academic units are planning to offer opportunities for students to meet each other on campus. Please stay tuned for notices from your school or department via Waseda mail.

Please be aware that everyone who comes to campus must wear a mask. We ask that you take your temperature before leaving home, dormitory room, or apartment, and that you refrain from coming to campus if you have a fever or other symptoms. Most in-person classes will be recorded and delivered online, which makes it possible for you to keep up with coursework when you are unable to attend in person.

You may also, of course, attend courses remotely if you remain outside Japan or the Tokyo Metropolitan area. Class recordings will be posted on our website. You will not be left behind.

We are gradually allowing the resumption of varsity sports clubs and student groups, as we monitor the COVID-19 situation. The “Waseda Student Festival 2020” in November, however, will be held online. For the time being, we have to live with the COVID-19 which means, among other things, that parties or group meetings with alcoholic beverages are not permitted. We trust that you will enjoy student life with the self-control and dignity befitting a Waseda student.

Please study hard and enjoy your student life with in good health this autumn and winter. We are looking forward to seeing you on campus soon!

Aiji Tanaka, President
Waseda University
