Opening Waseda University Campuses

June 22, 2020

Dear Waseda Students,

Beginning today, some gates of each campus of Waseda University will open for a limited number of hours each day. Please consult the following URL for details.

Access to buildings will remain restricted, however, even as gates open. Some buildings will become accessible beginning on July 6, 2020. Please await further notice. We will continue to provide all classes online during the spring semester and the spring-summer quarters in 2020.

In these difficult times, I have some requests to make of our students. Because we place the highest priority on the lives and health of our students, faculty, and staff, we are opening our campuses very cautiously and gradually.

Student circles and student groups must refrain from hosting in-person events until such time as we deem it safe to do so.  As you are undoubtedly aware, contact with others may not only result in your own infection with COVID-19, but also potentially in infecting others while you are asymptomatic. Please regard your own and others’ health with the utmost seriousness. We hope you will find appropriate ways to connect with other students, through virtual meetings and social media, and in small groups with appropriate levels of distancing, at 2 meters from each other.

Please avoid any circumstances in which (1) a room is closed without access the open air, (2) many people are gathered, and (3) people are gathered without appropriate social distancing.  Also, we ask that you please NEVER annoy residents in our neighborhood or pedestrians on the streets by making noise, crowding them on side-walks, or otherwise making them feel uncomfortable.

We hope you are as proud of being students of Waseda University as we are proud of you.  We trust that you will demonstrate your pride by adhering to the highest standards of conduct.

With cordial best wishes,

Aiji Tanaka, Ph.D.
President, Waseda University
