Given the spread of the novel corona virus (COVID-19) throughout the world, Waseda University has determined to cancel the entrance ceremonies for incoming students, which we had planned to hold on April 1 and 2, 2020.  Waseda University also has decided to postpone the starting date of classes and other educational activities from April 6 until some date on or later than April 20.

Let me explain why we have made these decisions.  Waseda University has two important missions.  Firstly, and it goes without saying, we are committed to providing students with an excellent education.  Secondly, we also have to ensure that students can work in a safe and healthy environment.  Because of our commitment to the safety and health of our students and their families, we have decided to cancel entrance ceremonies for spring 2020.

By the same token, we have also judged that April 6 would be too early for incoming students to arrive at Waseda from abroad and for returning students who may be outside Japan presently.  We do not wish for them to feel pressured to come to Japan by March 22, two weeks before April 6.  Because of the importance of providing a meaningful orientation for incoming and returning students, we have judged April 20, 2020 to be the earliest possible starting date for classes and other educational activities.  We are still watching the situation and have not made our final decision as to when we should start classes; but rest assured that we will inform you of our decision in a timely way.

Please take all due precautions to protect yourself and others from corona virus infection.  At the same time, please do not panic; stay cool and make appropriate judgments.  If you have any questions about our academic activities or your campus life at Waseda, please feel free to get in touch with the Center for International Education or with the office of your school or department.

We sincerely wish you good health, and we are looking forward to seeing you on campus soon.

Best regards,

Aiji Tanaka
President
Waseda University
