Yuzuru Hanyu, student at Waseda’s e-School (Internet Degree Program), won gold medal at the World Figure Skating Championships held in Helsinki, Finland on March 30. He succeeded in landing four quadruple jumps and totaling 321.59 points, breaking the world record set by Hanyu himself.

In the short program, Hanyu ended in fifth place (98.39 points), 10.66 points away from Javier Fernández, who was competing for his third consecutive win in the Championships. But, in the free program, Hanyu made an amazing comeback by landing four quadruple jumps for the first time: quadruple loops, quadruple salchows, quadruple salchows/triple toe loops, and quadruple toe loops. With a flawless performance, Hanyu scored a total of 223.20 points, beating his previous world record of 219.48 points. This competition was important for determining the qualifying countries for next year’s Pyongyang 2018 Olympics, and Hanyu’s win earned Japan three slots for male figure skaters.

Waseda University congratulates Hanyu for his breathtaking performance.
