On the 18th of December 2023, Waseda University hosted a notable event: “Let’s Talk about the Future of Waseda with the President.” At this rare gathering, approximately 80 students had the opportunity to engage directly with President Aiji Tanaka, a distinguished former professor and the current president of the University.
The event commenced with President Tanaka reflecting on the pandemic years at Waseda University. He highlighted the university’s strategic approach of “Minimizing Maximum Regret” and adherence to the Sustainable Development Goal principle of “Leave No One Behind.” The esteemed weekly news magazine Shūkan Asahi (週刊朝日) recognized these efforts as exemplary, awarding Waseda University the top rating in COVID-19 response. Echoing the founder’s words, “Be a person who gives willingly not only to an individual, family or a nation, but also to the entire world.” President Tanaka articulated the university’s goal to be a global leader in society through education, research, and societal contribution. He emphasized that these three pillars support one another, forming a synergistic triangular relationship.
The session then transitioned to an enthusiastic Q&A, where students actively engaged in fruitful discussions. One of the focal points was the construction of the new Building 9. It will be a new hub for the Faculty of Education and will showcase its commitment to interdisciplinary studies. This building will house departments ranging from educational sciences to various arts and sciences, fostering an environment where students can bridge the gap between the humanities and sciences.
Addressing concerns about student well-being, particularly mental health, the University has enhanced support systems. The establishment of the Accessibility Resource Center and the addition of clinical psychologists in the Health Support Center are steps towards ensuring the physical and mental health of students, which the University recognizes as fundamental.
Another key topic discussed was the issue of gender diversity among faculty members. While the current percentage of female faculty members is at approximately 20%, the University has set a target to increase this to 30% by 2032. Initiatives like the establishment of day-care centers for faculty and researchers are part of efforts to create a conducive environment for female academics.
In response to global challenges, especially climate change, Waseda University is consolidating its research strengths. The Net Zero Challenge and the founding of the Waseda Center for a Carbon Neutral Society are pivotal in the university’s strategy to combat environmental issues. Educational programs on carbon neutrality and plans for a minor in this field are being introduced to involve students in these efforts.
The significance of the English degree program was also highlighted, with emphasis placed on its role in preparing students for global engagement and promoting international intellectual exchange. Additionally, President Tanaka also acknowledged the need to enhance its international competitiveness, particularly in terms of support for study abroad programs and access to English literature, articles, and professional writings across fields. At the same time, to support entrepreneurial ambitions among students, the University has established the Center for Entrepreneurship. This initiative aims to foster a culture of innovation and business startups within the university community.
The session concluded with a discussion on diversity and inclusion, especially regarding LGBTQ+ communities. The Student Diversity Center’s Gender and Sexuality Center is actively working to change campus perceptions and promote a culture of equality and respect.
The insights gained from Q&A sessions with Waseda University officials emphasize the institution’s commitment to evolving and adapting to the changing needs of its students and the broader educational landscape.
As a student at the University myself, I was inspired to see other students engaging in direct dialogue with our University’s President, openly discussing current issues.
Owing to the success of the recent event, which facilitated profound exchanges between students and President Aiji Tanaka, Waseda University has planned a second event on the 15th of January 2024.
