On September 24, the entrance ceremonies for new undergraduates and graduate students were held at the Waseda Arena. As many who joined us this September are international students and Japanese returnees from overseas, the ceremonies were conducted completely in English.
As part of the University’s coronavirus preventative measures, only incoming students were invited to participate in the ceremonies. Live broadcast was held online for those who were unable to participate in person.
During the ceremony, Waseda University President Aiji Tanaka took to the stage to make his address to all incoming students:
“On behalf of Waseda University, I am delighted to welcome all incoming students to Waseda University today, September 24, 2022. Congratulations on your entrance to Waseda University. I extend heart-felt congratulations also, of course, to your parents, other family members, and friends.
We faculty members and administrative staff pledge to do our very best to provide you with the educational environment that will allow you to graduate with the confidence to contribute to human society around the globe. Please study hard while you are at Waseda, but at the same time, enjoy your student life. When you graduate from this university, I hope you will have found at least one thing to which you are determined to devote yourself. Once again, I wish you a wonderful and fruitful student life at Waseda. Best wishes to you all!”

After that, Keiko Tashiro, a Member of the Board, Corporate Executive Officer and Deputy President of Daiwa Securities Group, and an alumna of Waseda delivered a congratulatory address to the students.
“Congratulations, and welcome to Waseda University. For some of you, it must have been a long and frustrating journey to come to Japan and Waseda. Thankfully, the government finally changed course, and today I am very happy and honored to be able to welcome you to Waseda.
Waseda has always been known for its no nonsense, mind your own business, but we are here when you need us spirit. It formed the platform for what I am today, a strong basis that could tolerate the challenges I would be facing in the real world. It helped me weather the burst of the bubble, the Asian crisis, the world financial crisis and the turmoil after the big earthquake. It also prepared me for how I could rise against the prejudice I would face on being a woman in the male dominated financial industry. I welcome you to this platform, that is even more stronger than it was 38 years ago, stronger because it has added and adjusted to meet today’s ever demanding needs, and stronger because of the 38 years it has been adding to the alumni pool that will be your circle from today. I will say it once again, you have chosen well.
Once again welcome to Waseda, a community that will last your life time.”
