According to observed data, the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) installed at the International Space Station (ISS) detected relativistic electron precipitation (REP) events near the plasmapause from dusk to midnight.

REP events cause damages to satellites and destroy ozone layers. This new discovery is expected to advance research in the fields of space weather forecasting and atmospheric chemistry.

The CALET investigation is led by Professor Shoji Torii of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Waseda University in partnership with 21 institutions, including  Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.
