Voices of Students in Action: Suhon Kanai, 3rd year, School of Law

[Why I started]
I applied for this position because I believe that interviewing distinguished individuals I wouldn't normally have the opportunity to meet will broaden my general knowledge and provide a life-changing experience. I felt that simply attending classes passively and joining student club wouldn't allow me to experience the rich encounters and discoveries that are scattered throughout Waseda University, and this job was one way for me to proactively seize these new opportunities.

[Specific activities]
The job involves interviewing and writing articles, managing social media, and planning and executing public relations strategies. We interview successful Waseda students, Waseda cuisine, and sometimes even companies, and write articles that convey "what we want to tell Waseda students now." Another important task is to experiment with how to effectively deliver articles to students while actually managing social media. The job of a Waseda Weekly student staff member is not just to be a journalist who creates articles, but also to be a public relations officer who imagines the future of web media.

[Job satisfaction/benefits]
Having your own trial and error transformed into articles and preserved on the official website and social media comes with great responsibility, but it also generates unparalleled satisfaction. Furthermore, there is an atmosphere at the desk that actively embraces and implements students' ideas. You'll feel like you're the spice that makes this media outlet so special... I don't think you'll find another experience quite like that.

Voices of Students in Action: Yuki Doi, 3rd year, School of Commerce

[Why I started]
My university classes often fall during the third and fourth periods, so I was looking for a way to work on campus in the mornings. That's when I found the job posting on MyWaseda. I was drawn to the student-led project aimed at improving on-campus services and operations, so I applied.

[Specific activities]
Academic Advising Office provides a variety of services to students, alumni, faculty, and staff, including application procedures and consultations. Specifically, its main duties include answering phone calls regarding problems during classes, searching for lost and found items, issuing certificates for alumni, reissuing student IDs, and providing information on on-campus services. In addition, it offers student-centered services such as course registration consultations, student life consultations, and Talk Anywhere.

[Job satisfaction/benefits]
Firstly, I learned a lot about Waseda University and its on-campus services. I learned about how to get student discounts and the existence of W Space through my work, and now I use them all the time. Also, when I spoke with alumni on the phone and they said, "Thank you for your thoroughness. I'm glad I asked you," it brought me joy and a sense of fulfillment.

Voices of Students in Action: Nadeshiko Imaizumi, 4th year, School of Humanities and Social Sciences

[Why I started]
I was looking for ways to get involved with the university outside of student club activities when I found the recruitment notice for student staff leaders on the WAVOC website. I didn't have much experience in volunteer work, but I thought that I could offer suggestions that only a beginner could, so I applied. My desire to challenge myself with something new also motivated me to apply.

[Specific activities]
One of my main tasks is to provide Waseda University students with an opportunity to take their first step into volunteer activities. As someone from a rural area, I am interested in community-related activities, and I have previously organized study tours with ties to my hometown. I work about twice a week and sometimes provide advice to student club and students regarding volunteer work. Starting in 2025, we have been regularly holding the WAVOC Volunteer Cafe as a place where students interested in volunteering can interact.

[Job satisfaction/benefits]
I've become more aware of what's happening in society. I've started paying attention to current events, and this has been useful not only in WAVOC activities but also in my daily studies and job hunting. As a WAVOC student staff leader, I feel like I'm bridging the gap between social issues and students, so I'll continue to do my best to create opportunities for students to take that first step!

Voices of Students in Action: Chinatsu Takeuchi, 4th year student School of Political Science and Economics

[Why I started]
It all started when I was surprised to find that a quarter of my classmates were international students during my first year, and I was thrilled by the "diverse world" that was unfolding right around me. I wanted to be a bridge connecting Japanese students with classmates who saw the same campus from different perspectives, and that's when I saw an email from ICC recruiting student staff leaders to plan and run events. I thought, "This is it!" and applied.

[Specific activities]
This job involves collaborating with colleagues to create "new interactions," handling everything from planning events to managing them on the day to deepen intercultural understanding. The process of bringing a project to life, from negotiating with guests and creating promotional materials to setting up the venue, is constantly stimulating. Projects are supported extensively by staff members, so even those unfamiliar with planning or English can feel at ease! In addition, activities are diverse, including assisting visitors in both English and Japanese at the lounge (1st floor Building 3, Waseda Campus) and giving presentations at new students orientation.

[Job satisfaction/benefits]
I feel the greatest sense of fulfillment when I hear people say things like, "I made friends" or "My life changed" because of an event I organized. When I planned an event where we watched stand-up comedy with commentary from Professor, based on my favorite subject, "comedy," I was deeply moved by the sight of everyone laughing together, transcending cultural boundaries. Working with diverse colleagues has also led to discoveries that challenge my own assumptions, and I am learning something that will last a lifetime every day.

Voices of Students in Action: Risa Watanabe, 4th year student, School of Commerce

[Why I started]
I first learned about it when I participated in Waseda cuisine Stamp Rally during my first year. Initially, I didn't pay much attention to it, but as I spent time at Waseda, I came to appreciate the unique culture of Waseda cuisine, including its local restaurants and niche student club, and I began to want to share that appeal with others. Then, in my second year, I received an email recruiting participants, and I decided to take the plunge and apply.

[Specific activities]
Our group, primarily student-led, collaborates with staff to plan and manage various events. We are particularly focused on promoting the appeal of the university museum, working on quiz events around the facility, creating prizes and merchandise, and promoting them on social media. Our activities are diverse, including collaborations with local restaurants, a Waseda Bear photo shoot at Convocation, and support for university-sponsored events. In addition, some members are developing original projects utilizing the museum and other facilities.

[Job satisfaction/benefits]
We feel a great sense of accomplishment when we see the goods created from our ideas actually reaching students and being used by them. Voices of Students in Action: Sakura Komamine, 4th year, School of Political Science and Economics

[Why I started]
Immediately after entering university, I wanted to study abroad but was at a loss as to where to start. That's when I attended a spring study abroad fair. There, I received a lot of advice from student study abroad advisors based on their real-life experiences, and I was able to achieve my goal of a one-year exchange program. Based on that experience, I wanted to support students who are aiming to study abroad, and that's why I started this activity.

[Specific activities]
Our main activities include providing consultations to students who wish to study abroad, planning and managing study abroad-related events, and publishing a study abroad information magazine. As the leader of the team in charge of the study abroad fair, which is held twice a year, I work in cooperation with advisors and staff from Center for International Education to prepare for the fair. At the study abroad fair, we provide information about studying abroad through individual consultation booths and panel discussions by people who have studied abroad.

[Job satisfaction/benefits]
I find great satisfaction in alleviating the anxieties of students aspiring to study abroad and encouraging them to take that first step. When students who come to me for advice say, "I'm so glad I talked to you, Sakura," it makes me truly happy and makes me feel that becoming an advisor was the right choice. The appeal of this work is being able to see that my own study abroad experience is helping someone.
