Education other than compulsory education costs money. When I was a student, I fell in love with Indonesian and went to a cultural center to study it. When I studied abroad in the United States, I was introduced to a tutor at the local Indonesian embassy and continued my studies. I didn't get any results in either case, but I'm still satisfied because I got what I paid for.
On the other hand, why do universities give grades? Students come to buy advanced education because they want it. Therefore, it is our duty to provide what is commensurate with that. It goes without saying that they will also conduct class surveys to measure customer satisfaction. Tests provide an important service to students by measuring their level of understanding.
However, in my opinion, the final grade is only a pass or fail. Everyone can pass as long as they attend. For those who need to retake the course in order to graduate in four years, an additional fee will be charged, similar to the cultural center.
Why did I come to think of this? First, there are online classes. Once it went online, many answers were submitted that appeared to be copied and pasted, and I was fed up with dealing with them. Furthermore, generative AI is emerging. Although some advocate coexistence, it is impossible to completely prevent unauthorized use. If everything submitted is graded and graded without questioning, based on the theory of good character, serious students will just look like fools. Even if students don't receive grades such as A+, A, B, or C, students who study properly will graduate satisfied and gain the ability to compensate for their tuition fees. On the other hand, those who cheat and graduate without learning anything are like throwing away a lot of money, but that's their choice. Even if they go out into society and have a hard time, it's their own fault.
In any case, I want to concentrate on "proper" education and research. Fraud countermeasures and follow-up responses are fruitless tasks. I want you to think about what you would do if you were Faculty.
