Join us in Supporting Study Abroad between the U.S. and Japan!

Your support helps the continuation and expansion of US scholarship!

Join us in continuing and expanding the Waseda US Scholarship. Your donations will help support 10 to 15 students annually. Currently, due to the weak yen, it can be very difficult for many Waseda students to afford to study abroad in the US. Therefore, at this time, we are focusing on supporting Waseda students who are studying abroad in the US by helping out with some of their expenses, such as dormitory fees, etc.

Please make a donation through the following website.

Current Study Abroad Situation and US Scholarship at Waseda:

There is a saying, “Seeing is believing.” It is true that actually seeing with one’s own eyes and experiencing through one’s own senses leads to true understanding and belief. And that is exactly what studying abroad offers. There is a similar saying in Japanese:「百聞は一見に如かず」(Hearing it a hundred times is no substitute for actually seeing it once.), and it seems that many people from different cultures feel the same way. Although online international exchange has increased during the coronavirus pandemic, the opportunity for on-the-ground study abroad still presents a unique experience.

Since 1963, Waseda University has continued educational and research exchange programs with partner universities in the United States. There are currently more than 160 partner universities in the U.S., and more than 6,000 students have studied at Waseda University and its partner universities in the U.S. through study abroad programs. The U.S. is currently the most popular study abroad destination for Waseda students, with more than 400 students heading to the U.S. each year prior to the pandemic.

That said, as a result of the pandemic, in 2020 there were almost no students from Waseda University studying abroad. The situation has since improved, and as of December 2022, study abroad activity has resumed with 291 students from Waseda University attending school in the U.S. and 137 students from the U.S. attending Waseda University (254 students before the pandemic). Although that constitutes a definite improvement, due to the effects of the pandemic as well as a weak yen and strong dollar, study abroad is still not occurring at the level that we are accustomed to. Waseda University and Waseda USA hope to address these difficulties and further promote study abroad in the future.

Waseda USA has awarded the Waseda US Scholarship to Waseda University students studying abroad between Japan and the United States as part of its efforts to promote academic exchange between the two countries. The scholarship is essentially funded by donations. Currently, it is primarily used to support students from Waseda, who, due to the weak yen, are struggling to take part in study abroad in the US so that they can reap the many benefits that such an invaluable experience can provide. Donated money may be used to help with dormitory fees and other living expenses.
