Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese decorative art using tightly twisted cords made from washi paper. Mizuhiki carries deep symbolic meanings, such as warding off evil spirits and symbolizing the bonds between people. It is also a way for the giver to express heartfelt intentions.
At ICC, we are hosting a workshop where you can experience the beautiful Japanese craft of mizuhiki knot tying.
-This time, the theme is New Year’s-
November marks the approach of the year’s end, a season when people gradually begin preparing for the new year.
In Japan, it is customary to tie Mizuhiki cords around the sleeves of celebratory chopsticks used for the New Year’s table, conveying wishes for a bright year ahead and serving as a charm for protection.
In this event, you will not only learn how to tie mizuhiki knots, but also have the opportunity to share your own country’s or region’s New Year traditions with one another across different cultures.
This time, we are delighted to welcome mizuhiki artist Ms. Anna Tanaka as our guest instructor. Ms. Tanaka expresses the beauty of Japanese culture through mizuhiki, incorporating designs that suit modern lifestyles, and continues to pursue her work with dedication each day.
Experience the heart of Japanese tradition, filled with wishes for the New Year.
