Do you know “Daruma”?
Daruma is a Japanese lucky doll with a round, red body and blank eyes. You color in one when you make a wish or set a goal, and the other when it comes true. In Japan, they are often sold at shrines or temples, but few people know their meaning and tradition.
Most of the Japanese Daruma are made in Takasaki, Gunma, and Takasaki Daruma is a well-known traditional handicraft of Japan. Daruma have been popular among people as a talisman expressing good omens and warding off evil since the Edo period.
There are a variety of traditional handicrafts all over Japan, and the wisdom and techniques are rooted in the local climate areas and lifestyle, passed down from generation to generation.
For this workshop, we have invited a Takasaki Daruma craftsman to teach their techniques and traditions. You can even try your hand at painting a moustache on your very own Daruma.
Please join this event to experience traditional Japanese crafts with your own hands. Create your own one of a kind Daruma and interact with people from all over!
*You can choose the color of your own Daruma. Select your favorite color or choose by what you wish for or your fortuitous direction!
