ICC Lithuanian Culture Night – A 90 minute journey to the land of green and honey -(June 19)

Poster

Lithuania is a small country in Europe which is about eighty percent of the size of Hokkaido and has around one third the population of Tokyo.

One of the Baltic countries, most of Lithuania is covered by farmland and forests which give it the nickname “The land of forests and lakes”. Lithuanian people live their lives treasuring their natural environment.

Lithuanian people love to sing. Every four years they hold the Lithuanian Song Festival, a week long national festival of songs and dances which have been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This huge festival celebrates and symbolizes the freedom of the country and is a truly marvellous spectacle.

Lithuania’s connections with Japan also run deep and Lithuanians and Japanese have done cultural exchange since long ago. Most famously, during World War II the Japanese vice-consul to Lithuania (and former Waseda University student) Chiune Sugihara gave the “Visas of Life” to thousands of Jews allowing them to flee the holocaust. Saving so many lives has lead to him becoming known as the “Oriental Schindler” and the focus of many stories and films since.

Now the ICC is holding an event to introduce this beautiful and historic country of Lithuania.

We have invited the current Ambassador of Lithiuania to Japan Gediminas Varvuolis to give the opening presentation for the event. We will also have a presentation introducing tourist spots from “Lithuania Travel Tourism Development Agency” and Lithuanian students will give an introduction of the culture of Lithuania along with a quiz, so there’s plenty to learn and enjoy.

As well as all that, the first 80 participants will receive some Lithuanian raw honey as a present!
We’ll be waiting for you, so come along and join us!
