What do you imagine when you hear the word bento(lunch)? <- For non-Japanese maybe bento and lunch are two different things.
There are many types of Japanese Bento where various and colorful ingredients are used so that we can enjoy not only the taste, but also the sight of them. There are even many varieties of the lunch boxes themselves, from the traditional Magewappa design to cute patterns and shapes.
Now ICC presents an event that focuses on a type of bento called “Kyaraben” or character bento which is dedicated to design! Character bento is a bento which is arranged so the food resembles animals and characters from anime and manga. There are many homemakers who work on TV and in magazines as specialists of making character bento.
For this event the ICC will prepare ingredients so you can try making your own cute character bentos! There will be a short presentation about how Japanese bento culture has changed over time too.
Even though life in Japan has become more modern and westernized, why does the Japanese Bento continue to be successful? You might find out the secret at this event.
Anyone who wants to try making character bento, who is interested in Japanese Bento culture, or who just wants to have international exchange over food are welcome!
