Beyond Movements, Discovering Self-Expression through Dance Challenge

 Monica Stella

Dance is quite popular recently due to the influence of SNS. As someone who is into idol groups, I have always enjoyed watching and trying their choreographies. However, I had never thought about the meaning of “dance” itself. It was merely a hobby to do during my leisure time.

Through this event, I learned that more than just a set of movements, dance is a form of expression and communication. I learned that expressing ourselves, through choreography or even in daily life, requires confidence and courage. At times, I overthink that my expression would be out of the “usual” or “standard”, but no two people think the exact same thing, everyone is different and unique to themselves, and thus I think I gain a little assurance that it is okay to go on and express myself the way I like.

I really enjoyed the presentation by the guest, Gome-sensei who is very cheerful and enthusiastic. One thing that I would like to highlight from the presentation is that even without talking, we could make new friends through our self-expression from dancing.

The second part of the event was to make a choreography within our group, which I think was the most interesting part of the event. I was confused at first since we were asked to make choreographies based on our conversations about our hobby, favorite food, and also traditional dance but the choreographies turned out to be very unique to each group. Also, even within the same group where everyone dances to the same choreography, each and every person is unique to themselves, as everyone has their own way to dance and to express themselves.

Overall, I think this is a very nice and meaningful event, especially since this is my first ICC event. I would be happy to attend more events. Since ICC has a lot of events, I think it would be great to try out various new things.
