“Where are you from?” A simple question that all of us face at one point or another in our lives. For most of us the answer is as straight forward as simply naming a country, but for some the answer is not as clear.
For those who have spent the majority of their lives in a country different from that of their parents’, their childhood is a jumbled mixture of different customs, cultures, and languages resulting in some unique developments of personal and cultural identity.
Specializing in the field of stateless people and currently teaching a course at Waseda on Chinese diaspora and the globalization of migrants, Professor Chen Tien Shi will be sharing with us about her experiences growing up as a stateless third culture kid in Yokohama Japan, and what views and observations she has accumulated over the years regarding the relationship between self identity and culture.
Regardless of whether you yourself are a third culture kid or you are simply interested in the concept of personal versus cultural identity, this talk session will no doubt provide valuable insights into an increasingly complex and globalized world.
