A Turkic state in Central Asia with a population of only 6 million, Turkmenistan has an area slightly larger than the US state of California.
Bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran and lying on the great Caspian Sea, almost 80% of the country is in fact covered by the Karakum (Black Sand) Desert. Present-day Turkmenistan covers land that has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries, including the medieval city of Merv, known as one of the greatest cities of the Islamic world and also an important stop on the Silk Road.
The traditional life of the Turkmen people is that of nomadic shepherds, and they have long been known for their fine carpets and horses.
Modern Turkmenistan is a country wealthy in natural resources and in fact it has the world’s fourth largest reserves of natural gas.
Since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the country has been modernizing rapidly and the capital Ashgabat has become a haven for new-age architecture.
In this ICC event we’ll have a greeting from the Turkmen Ambassador, presentations about Turkmen culture and fine carpets as well as a mini-fashion show displaying national costumes. Afterwards there’ll
be an exhibition of Turkmen carpets along with a Cafe Time with local snacks! Don’t miss such a rare opportunity!
