One Continent: Two Nations, Two Traditions
Join ICC for a unique experience to compare music of East Asia and West Asia; music of China and Azerbaijan to be specific. Explore the melody of Guzheng from China and Tar from Azerbaijan.
For this event, we are honoured to welcome Professor Polina Dessiatnitchenko, an expert in ethnomusicology and Shii Kobayashi, a student from SILS with over 15 years of experience in the Guzheng.
Experience how different modes of music evokes different emotions through a live performance by Prof. Polina and Kobayashi san, discuss, compare the differences with your fellow students and gain insight with the performers’ explanation on each region’s music.
Whether you are passionate about music or culture and ethnicity, “Echoes of Asia” is a great chance to listen, learn and experience how two sides of Asian music truly reflect one’s emotion in harmony.

Polina Dessiatnitchenko
An ethnomusicologist whose work is focused on the creativity of Azerbaijani mugham. Currently, she is teaching ethnomusicology and musicology courses at Waseda University and completing her first book manuscript which is based on her PhD dissertation at the University of Toronto (2017) and postdoctoral research at Harvard University (2018-2021).
Shii Kobayashi
A student in School of International Liberal Studies (SILS). She has over 15 years of experience in Guzheng. She first started learning to play Guzheng from the age of 4 in China and has been playing it ever since.
