MIZUHIKI Workshop: Traditional Japanese Way to Convey Your Heart ICC Japanese Culture Event (6/24) ◆Deadline: 6/17, 9am

Poster

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese decorative art using tightly twisted cords made from washi paper. You might have seen them adorning celebratory envelopes or New Year’s decorations in Japan, where multiple cords are often combined to create intricate designs. Mizuhiki carries deep symbolic meanings, such as warding off evil spirits and symbolizing the bonds between people. It is also a way for the giver to express heartfelt intentions.

This time, we are delighted to welcome mizuhiki artist Ms. Anna Tanaka as our guest instructor. Ms. Tanaka expresses the beauty of Japanese culture through mizuhiki, incorporating designs that suit modern lifestyles, and continues to pursue her work with dedication each day.

Join us in writing a heartfelt message to someone special, wrapping it in washi, and tying it together with mizuhiki to convey your feelings.

You can create a washi envelope and discover the traditional art of origata (ceremonial wrapping).

Let’s experience the Elegance of Japanese Gift-Giving Culture!

Workshop Highlights
  1. Write a message on ippitsusen (Japanese small letter pad)
  2. Wrapping: Learn the art of Origata etiquette (wrap the message with washi paper).
  3. Mizuhiki knot: Learn how to tie the Mizuhiki.
  4. Tie the Mizuhiki onto the wrapped letter—your heartfelt letter is complete!

*By the day of the event, please think about who you’d like to send the message to and what you’d like to write (notepad slip size).”
