There are more than 100 scholarships available for international students. All scholarships funded by Waseda University are partial, and most are merit-based. Approximately 30% of international students receive some form of scholarship.

Waseda University has partnership agreements at both university-wide and department-wide levels with over 800 universities and institutions in 91 countries and regions (as of March 2024). There are a variety of study abroad programs, most of which last one semester or one academic year in duration. By transferring credits back to Waseda University, students may be able to graduate in four years. Students who study abroad in an exchange program will pay Waseda University’s tuition fees instead of those of the hosting partner university.
Double degree programs are offered at both university-wide and department-wide levels. To name a few, our double degree program partner universities include Peking University and the National University of Singapore. Eligibility requirements vary for each program. Students who complete the double degree program will receive 2 degrees: one from Waseda University and the other from the partner university, upon graduation from both institutions.
Waseda alumni work in a variety of fields, including professional services, information services, banking, and insurance. Approximately 30% of international students start their careers in Japan after graduation. Our Career Center supports students by offering job-hunting guidance, seminars, internship opportunities, and recruitment talks with companies actively hiring international students (English support is available).

“English-based Degree Program” refers to the degree program where the classes you take toward earning a degree are taught in English. Japanese language proficiency is not required at the time of application.

Application periods for September intake English-based degree programs vary by school. Generally speaking, they go from early-January to early-February. (School of International Liberal Studies has April intake and its application period starts from mid-August to early September.)

For general admission through the Admissions Office (AO), applicants may apply to multiple schools. However, only one major can be chosen when applying to the School of Political Science and Economics or the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

The acceptance rate is approximately 20% to 45%. It varies from year to year and from school to school.
Required documents vary depending on the school the applicant is applying to; please refer to Application Guides for details. In general, the required documents include standardized test scores, English proficiency test scores, transcripts, high school graduation certificates, and a statement of purpose. Some schools, such as the School of Political Science and Economics, the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering, and the School of Creative Science and Engineering, also require a recommendation letter.
Waseda University does not implement an expiration date for standardized test results.
There is no minimum score requirement for the standardized test.

For IBDP subject level requirements, both HL and SL are accepted. (In total, at least 3 HL subjects must be taken.) For the IBDP Math requirement, both Math AA and Math AI are acceptable.
Yes, you can, but when applying to the School of Political Science and Economics, the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering, or the School of Creative Science and Engineering, if any of the required subjects are missing, it is strongly recommended to take the ACT or SAT (For applicants to the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering or the School of Creative Science and Engineering, SAT+AP is recommended.)
The School of Fundamental Science and Engineering and the School of Creative Science and Engineering accept AP test scores as part of the standardized test results, but SAT scores are still required. Other schools do not accept AP scores as standardized test results.
Applicants need to submit at least one standardized test score.
(Exception: SAT + AP for applicants to the Science and Engineering majors.)
In general, AP, IB, or A-level credits cannot be transferred to Waseda University credits. However, IB credits earned in high school may be accepted by the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) as Waseda University’s credits. For more details, please contact the SILS office.
None of the Schools set a minimum GPA requirement.
Only the School of Culture, Media and Society (JCulP) sets a minimum score requirement for English proficiency tests. Other schools do not have minimum score requirements.
English proficiency tests taken at home, such as TOEFL Home Edition, are not accepted.
For English-based undergraduate degree programs, applicants are not required to come to Japan as the assessment is based on document screening and, if applicable, online interviews. For Japanese-based undergraduate degree programs (外国学生のための学部入学試験), some schools conduct in-person tests or interviews. In such cases, applicants will need to come to Japan to take the test or interview.
Only the School of Political Science and Economics (SPSE) accepts transfer students and admits them to the second year. However, please note that SPSE will discontinue admission by transfer starting in 2026, with the last intake being in 2025.
The School of Political Science and Economics and the School of International Liberal Studies accept transfer students from other Waseda schools/departments. For change of major, only the School of Political Science and Economics, the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering, and the School of Creative Science and Engineering allow students to change majors within their respective schools.
Students proficient in Japanese may take academic classes conducted in Japanese. Additionally, Japanese language classes are available at the Center for Japanese Language.

Students can take Japanese language courses at the Center for Japanese Language (CJL). CJL offers the Japanese Language Program (JLP) and the Short-term Japanese Program (SJP). Providing 14 weeks of courses in each Spring and Fall semester, JLP allows students to learn Japanese comprehensively according to their interests and level. In SJP, students can study Japanese intensively for 3-4 weeks during the summer and winter periods.
All nationals can apply for English-based degree programs. Eligibility is not determined by nationality.
