ワークショップ「エイズ文学再考」―Rethinking AIDS Literature

We invited two scholars from the United States—John Treat (Professor Emeritus, Yale University) and Chris Lowy (Associate Professor, Carnegie Mellon University)—who are engaged in research and creative writing related to AIDS literature and related topics, to reflect on the history of AIDS literature in Japan and the United States. John Treat gave a lecture titled “A Half-Century of American AIDS Fiction” and shared profound insights rooted in his own experiences and the echoes of language-folds reflecting throughout his novels. Chris Lowy gave a lecture titled “The Afterlives of AIDS Literature in Japan” and expanded the possibilities of Japanese AIDS literature while resonating with those echoes. And Takeuch Kayo (Professor, Aoyama Gakuin) as a disucussant explored how the literary landscape was shaped by the circumstances of that time.  The roundtable was also very lively and fruitful, with many excellent questions and comments. By the day before, 70 people had registered to participate, and on the day of the event, approximately 60 people from Japan and abroad attended, both in person and via Zoom. It will likely be remembered as Japan’s first workshop on AIDS literature.
