イベント概要

「アジアとグローバルな文脈におけるオルタナティブな未来への想像力」をテーマに、地理学者Balawansuk Lynrah氏の講演を英語で開催します。本講演でLynrah氏が取り上げるインド東北部のボドランドは、武装紛争と州となることを要求する地から、開発を志向する自治地域へと大きく変貌した場所です。Lynrah氏は、この地に生きる若者たちの質的研究を行い、不確実性や不安定さとどのように向き合い、対応していのかを明らかにしてきました。本企画では日本の課題を、ボドランドの若者の生きられた経験を参照しながら見つめ直し、さらにグローバルな規模でつながりあう問題ととらえて、対話の場をひらくことを目指します。

The Research Institute for Letters, Arts and Sciences will host a lecture by geographer Balawansuk Lynrah on “Imagining Alternative Futures in Asian and Global Contexts.” Drawing on her research with young people in Bodoland, northeastern India—a region that has undergone significant transformation from a site of armed conflict and statehood demands to an autonomous region aspiring towards development—Dr. Lynrah explores how young people respond to uncertainties and precarities by developing “backup plans”.
By reflecting on these insights alongside issues facing young people in Japan, this event opens a space to rethink shared challenges and to consider how alternative futures might be imagined across interconnected global contexts.

講演要旨/Abstract

In this presentation, Dr. Balawansuk Lynrah examines the life trajectories of young people in Bodoland, a peripheral region in northeastern India that has undergone significant transformation from a site of armed conflict and statehood demands to an autonomous region aspiring towards development. Drawing on qualitative interviews with young people, she analyzes how they respond to uncertainties and precarities by developing “backup plans”. Building on Craig Jeffery’s (2010) concept of timepass, she argues that backup plans illustrate young people’s active engagement in strategizing for future security, challenging the notion of passivity. The concept of backup thus offers a lens to understand how young people anticipate, adapt, adjust, and navigate structural constraints in pursuit of alternative futures. These practices highlight deep entanglements between imagined futures and the specific geographies inhabited by young people, while also foregrounding their agency, resilience, capacity for hope, and capabilities to aspire from the margins.

Dr. Balawansuk Lynrah（Geographer/地理学者）

東京大学国際高等研究所東京カレッジ・ポストドクトラル・フェロー。シンガポール国立大学（NUS）で地理学の博士号を取得。若者たちがどのように自らの未来を想像し、切り開いていくのかを研究している。子ども・若者の地理学、様々な未来の可能性に関する研究、日常政治、開発、正義などの領域に関心がある。博士課程進学前の2011年から、ボドランドのコミュニティに根差した団体で活動しており、その経験は若者たちとの研究に大きな影響を与えている。

Balawansuk Lynrah is a postdoctoral fellow at Tokyo College, The University of Tokyo. She holds a PhD in Geography from the National University of Singapore (NUS), and her research explores how young people imagine and navigate their futures. Her broader interests include the geographies of children and young people, futures, everyday politics, development, and justice. Before starting her doctoral research, she worked with a community-based organization in Bodoland from 2011, which deeply shaped her research with young people.
