Kachōga 花鳥画:
Picturing Other-than-Human Being in Japanese Painting

概要
Kachōga 花鳥画(bird-and-flower) painting has been the victim in different times and places of both “plant blindness” and the amnesiac agendas of colonial appropriation. This talk examines the bird-and-flower paintings of Edo Rinpa artist Sakai Hōitsu 酒井抱一 (1761–1829) to ask how, in this visually charismatic and explicitly linguistically mediated mode of painting, memory co-habits with botany, and what it can disclose about hope as an efficacious mode of art historical being. Through interdisciplinary close-looking with scientists and poets, it examines what the history of Japanese painting can reveal about the perceptual plasticity of bird-and-flower to burnish novel states of attention. It takes seriously both the bird’s eye and the bug’s eye view, and the potential inherent in our apprehension of bird-and-flower as an active poetics of intersubjectivity with the capacity to generate modes of change critical to the evolution of human being in our own moment.
