In November 2025, Professor Detey co-published a book chapter in French with Prof. J. Durand (Toulouse University, France) entitled “Éléments de réflexion pour une phonologie située : du théorique au didactique” (Some thoughts for a “situated phonology”: from theory to pedagogy).

Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to “situate” phonology both within a global approach of language and in its relationship with second language teaching. On the basis of sample analyses of French and English, we defend the idea that phonology and didactics can work together, very much as they did in the early days of modern linguistics, while recognizing that their objectives and methods are not fully identical. After an overview of the place of phonology within the architecture of language and a brief discussion of its relationship with phonetics, we argue that, for phonology to be “situated”, it needs to be based on technologically sound and rigorously defined corpora that take into account sociolinguistic variation. We then show that sociologically controlled corpus phonology allows foreign language teaching to integrate variation from the early stages, provided that it is done in a psycholinguistically motivated manner.
