My research topic for my Master’s thesis focuses on the integration of low-skilled foreign workers within Japanese society. In other words, the main purpose of this research study consists in understanding the role of Japanese institutions and their ability to implement relevant immigration policies ensuring the respect of labour rights for both national and foreign workers.
Despite Japan’s reluctance to open up its borders and welcome incoming immigrants, the presence of foreign labour remains a significant asset helping Japan to face its demographic decline and sustain economic activity.
An emphasis on the perspective of labour unions and the voice of foreign workers themselves can have a positive impact on Japan’s policy-making process and the enactment of future regulations in the field of immigration and labour relations.
