My thesis paper, “Shadows under the Sun,” is focused on how black-Japanese athletes are represented in Japan.
My attention is focused on two notable star athletes representing Japan on the global stage, Naomi Osaka and Rui Hachimura.
Through the use of semiotic analysis, I seek to comprehend what messages their commercial representations are possibly sending to the Japanese public.
As commercialized images are produced not just by corporations, but by the society/history they are based in, analyzing these images becomes critical to understanding what the Japanese public gaze takes away when viewing the two athletes’ images.
