Definitions and interpretations of security changed in many ways following the end of the Cold War.
For my thesis, I draw on critical security studies and the work of Buzan and Waever from the Copenhagen School; in particular their analyses of securitization, security sectors, and regional security complexes.
I argue that patterns of strategic alignment are emerging in the Asian region around two poles: China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and the idea of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
I consider the possibility that as a result what Buzan and Waever refer to as an ‘Asian Supercomplex’ is emerging, through the penetration and merger of three older regional security complexes.
My research will focus on the foreign policies of three key actors, China, Japan and India, and the ways in which their actions are contributing to or preventing the emergence of this supercomplex.
