I think GSICCS is a great place to further one’s studies because it gives you an amazing opportunity to widen your perspective while also deepening your understanding of your own research field. The classes offered here have a wide range that suits students from many backgrounds. As a former Japanese Studies major myself, I believe that my understanding of Japan and the world has been broadened through classes such as Gender and Sexuality which explores Asian womanhood through film representations, while classes such as Special Topic in Culture and Media gave me new insights into the foundations and inner workings of creative industries. Students at GSICCS also come from very diverse backgrounds, so that you are not only studying new things from within the curriculum, but you always have a chance to learn from and engage with new points of views outside class as well.

My current research is about glocalization in the Japanese food industry and how that reflects the idea of what Japanese identity is. GSICCS is a great place to do such research because it allows me to further my knowledge about Japan while also combining it with new study areas such as media and marketing. These insights were also very helpful in the process of finding employment in the industry which is relevant to my research field. Therefore, I highly recommend students who are interested in carrying out interdisciplinary research to consider applying to GSICCS!
